IC 1340 - False Color Palettes

The following astronomical image was taken by a user of GoldAstro.com products and presented here by permission.  Copyrights may apply.  Please contact the credited imager to inquire about permission for use and/or availability of larger images.

The four images below are different palettes on the same narrowband data for the western portion of IC 1340, a part of the Veil Nebula which is a supernova remnant. They are presented for comparison of the palettes and should not be considered final "best possible" images for the given palettes. All four images were created using the same basic process: automatic luminance and color balance on the H-a, S-II, and O-III data with a gamma stretch and modest increase in saturation. The images have not been enhanced by any other processing. The various palettes may benefit more or less from different enhancements, such as adjusting primary and secondary channels for stretching, saturation, etc.

The first two palettes are the familiar Hubble Space Telescope palette (SHO=RGB) and Canada France Hawaii Telescope palette (HOS=RGB). The last two palettes are false color mappings using secondary colors cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY).

The mosaic of the four images is necessarily low resolution, but the images will stand up to some amount of zooming in with your web browser for comparing image details.
